Grapefruit Gin Mojito

Grapefruit Gin MojitoIt’s Friday and after 5 o’clock so it’s time to enjoy the great weather and treat yourself. So pick your poison. No, stop, no need for poison, because it’s Friday! It has been a long time since we posted a cocktail recipe, so let me correct this oversight… immediately. I see you eying that grapefruit, so let’s make something of it. I will admit I am a new convert to the grapefruit bandwagon. I can’t remember ever liking them (much how I never ate bananas until two years ago and now I rarely go a day without a banana for breakfast), but that seems to have changed for the better. In fact, you should be seeing several grapefruit-related recipes coming in the near future, given that I bought a whole sack of them on a whim. I have dubbed this drink a grapefruit gin mojito, or “dojito,” because I can’t find an existing name, so I will take some liberties. It is a combo of a salty dog (grapefruit juice and gin) and a mojito (sugar, lime, rum, mint, and club soda), and I’d like to think it combines the best of both. I also threw in a bit of Cointreau orange liqueur because I think serves as a nice counter for the bitterness of the grapefruit. If you haven’t hopped on yet, the bandwagon is filling up fast!

Grapefruit Gin Mojito
  1. 1.5 oz gin
  2. 0.5 oz Cointreau (or triple sec)
  3. 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  4. 6-8 mint leaves
  5. Juice of 1/2 lime
  6. Juice of 1/2 grapefruit (~1.5 oz)
  7. Club soda
  1. Muddle mint leaves in a highball glass. Add the juice of 1/2 lime and sugar. Swirl until the sugar is dissolved (you could also use a simple syrup with the same concentration of sugar). Add ice, grapefruit juice, gin, and Cointreau. Top off with club soda and swirl with a straw or swizzle stick. Garnish with a sprig of mint, or just enjoy immediately.
  1. Remember to always use a coaster!
