It’s Friday and after 5 o’clock so it’s time to enjoy the great weather and treat yourself. So pick your poison. No, stop, no need for poison, because it’s Friday! It has been a long time since we posted a cocktail recipe, so let me correct this oversight… immediately. I see you eying that grapefruit, so let’s make something of it. I will admit I am a new convert to the grapefruit bandwagon. I can’t remember ever liking them (much how I never ate bananas until two years ago and now I rarely go a day without a banana for breakfast), but that seems to have changed for the better. In fact, you should be seeing several grapefruit-related recipes coming in the near future, given that I bought a whole sack of them on a whim. I have dubbed this drink a grapefruit gin mojito, or “dojito,” because I can’t find an existing name, so I will take some liberties. It is a combo of a salty dog (grapefruit juice and gin) and a mojito (sugar, lime, rum, mint, and club soda), and I’d like to think it combines the best of both. I also threw in a bit of Cointreau orange liqueur because I think serves as a nice counter for the bitterness of the grapefruit. If you haven’t hopped on yet, the bandwagon is filling up fast!
- 1.5 oz gin
- 0.5 oz Cointreau (or triple sec)
- 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
- 6-8 mint leaves
- Juice of 1/2 lime
- Juice of 1/2 grapefruit (~1.5 oz)
- Club soda
- Muddle mint leaves in a highball glass. Add the juice of 1/2 lime and sugar. Swirl until the sugar is dissolved (you could also use a simple syrup with the same concentration of sugar). Add ice, grapefruit juice, gin, and Cointreau. Top off with club soda and swirl with a straw or swizzle stick. Garnish with a sprig of mint, or just enjoy immediately.
- Remember to always use a coaster!
